It was one of those occasions when cold and rain seemed to sink into your bones, and I was unfortunate it found me outside that day.

Hence I was left with no choice but to continue running till I reached home, allow me to tell you why a cup of hot chocolate hits different more especially if you are in South Africa.

If you ask me, there is nothing worse than rain, when the skies turn black as horror and the trees scream and make sounds that tell you that the worst is about to happen.

A South African winter evening

I remember thinking to myself, “Should I go back to school or should I continue and accept my fate?” as soon as it started to rain as a young high school student, worn out from the endless afternoon classes that came with Grade 12.

It was already late, my books were drenched in water, and I don’t want to discuss my clothes, so I didn’t even bother to run any more as i was approaching home.

To make it worse, I had to wipe my face every few seconds to see where I was going because the rain kept on getting into my eyes and combining with my salty bodily fluids.

And just as I was about to take the final turn back home, I noticed my mother in a dark blue raincoat on her way to fetch me with an umbrella, who would I be without her?.

As much as we where stack between excitement and covering my body and with and umbrella, street lights turned off, houses turned black!! Yhoo loadshadding yet again.

I’m not sure how heavy rain affects electricity, but we’ve learned to expect, that power will surely be off in Vaal Triangle when its raining, and when we arrived home, everything was dirty and muddy.

Why a cup of hot chocolate hits different

I have been planning all the way back home step by step, undress, put on some warm clothes, and get into bed as soon as I can.

However, as I warmed up, I noticed a tickly sensation in my throat, which I knew would be the beginning of a serious case of the flu.

Little did I know that my father had already prepared a hot stove (wood burner), and I remember tiptoeing into the kitchen with my blanket to feel the heat.

To minutes later I was holding one of my favorite pink enamel mugs and inhaling the aroma of hot chocolate with ginger , which was both fiery and aromatic, hence till date I don’t ask why a cup of hot chocolate hits different in winter.

It wasn’t until later that I realized the entire home was infused with the aroma of milk and ginger powder which has been boiling inside our old wrinkled whistling kettle.

I’m not sure if we’re too typical at home or just enjoy nature and vintage items, but we have enamel mugs, bowls, and kettles for everyday use.

And while still hugging my hands on my warm mug, trapped between my thoughts and sipping, I could feel everything returning to normal, my academic stress fading away, and my thoughts relaxing—exactly what I needed and had been hoping for.

Beyond just a drink

My enamel cup transitioned from a regular cup to a special occasion cup that I use to reflect on myself, connect with my inner child, and remember who I am.

I take what I eat, where I eat it, and how I consume it extremely seriously, it’s no longer just about satisfying my taste buds or feeling good in my stomach.

It’s also about the mental comfort and connection it provides and this is why a cup of hot chocolate hits different in the cold.

Which made me realize the importance of tiny acts of kindness from loved ones, support doesn’t need to be in the form of cash or tangible products, but simply showing up and thinking about others is enough.

Back then, all I could think about was peer pressure, competition, trying to win people over, and keeping up with the latest trends, but today I compromise my mental health more by consuming content that is healing and informative like camping videos that revealed the historical background of Cappadocia.

I’ve also learned to bring together tradition with modern living because I was born in the 20th century where technology is trying so hard to replace tradition.

I mean everything has its proper place and time, in my opinion, and traditional methods don’t have to be replaced by modern ones.

The formation of  a new tradition

For many people, the early darkness, cold air, and gloomy atmosphere of winter might feel heavy and demanding, but my family and I discovered ways to make winter evenings feel like a vacation away from home, you probably have those moments too.

  • The idea is to use repetition and emotion to elevate simple acts into something meaningful. I hope this motivates you to start something on your own.
  • For example, my family friend would frequently tell us about her home’s conference room, which was actually an empty guest room.
  • They used it for their own small family gatherings until it became a location where they would sit, talk, interact, and connect every Sunday evening.
  • This enabled them to keep track of everyone’s life events over time.

Reminding me of how my family and I used to spend the winters by the wood burner, we would usually make sure to collect wood as winter draws near and keep it somewhere dry so we can get more without having to worry about where the next one will come from.

That winter evening showed me that comfort does not necessarily come from huge events. It can be found in a warm mug, a quiet room, and a few pleasant minutes alone.

This why a cup of hot chocolate hits different in winter, because sometimes, it’s not the grand moments that stay with us, but the quiet ones wrapped in warmth
