Without NSFAS, my university experience could have finished before it even started.

From tuition costs to daily student expenses, NSFAS helped me stay focused on my studies and pursue my ambitions as a South African student.

But finding reliable information has never been easier in Evaton North, and being isolated becomes a huge difficulty owing to a lack of social connections and a lack of a supportive network to turn to.

Instead, I learned about how NSFAS supports South African students through conversations and shared experiences.

And this is where I revisited my dream of being a young educated black woman, with a reassured vision this time of my dreams not being cut short due to a lack of financial aid.

How NSFAS supports South African students?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African bursary programme that has sent millions of eligible national students to higher education institutions such as North-West University (NWU), Vaal University of Technology(VUT), and Sedibeng TVET College to further their education in various faculties.

The majority of us refer to NSFAS as the “Father Of The Nation” because our degrees and qualifications demonstrate how NSFAS supports South African students, and how its role extends beyond simply paying fees and providing transport, to actively building a strong, supportive foundation that motivates us to have the ability to put bread on the table in the future.

Furthermore, covering provides us with a roof, food to weather the storms, transportation to school, and, most significantly, access to school becomes a fatherly role to the majority of South African students.

The importance of a bursary fund

Many of you may be wondering what the purpose of a bursary scheme is other than to provide you with an allowance while you study.

Well, the bursary is an access card for you in a university or a college; without it, you won’t be allowed to visit the school grounds and even study unless you are enrolled as a self-paying student.

So, keep in mind that prioritizing your academics is critical because everything you do, good or poor, comes at a cost. For example:

  • Unlike public high schools, higher education institutions require payment for access to lectures (teachers).
  • You pay to use lecture rooms, libraries, and other campus facilities.
  • You pay for exam preparation and university enrolment assistance (registration).
  • Unlike public schools, where textbooks and study materials are provided for free, students must purchase them at the university.
  • You must pay for housing and rent a location near the college that is easily accessible.
  • You may need to pay for transportation from campus to your preferred residence, as campuses are typically located further away than local schools.

As a result, providing both NSFAS and the university of your choice with your academic and identity information allows them to collaborate and reach a mutual agreement that will allow you to pursue your desired qualification.

With me, I was first admitted to study at NWU Vaal Campus and then applied for a bursary to cover my tuition fees.

In most situations, university undergraduate applications open before NSFAS applications do in South Africa.

Going to university, fear of the unknown

My experience at NWU Vaal campus was unlike any other, as much as I was excited, at the back of my mind, I was thinking about the tuition fees and everything in between.

And the minute I received an email notification of a class timetable, venue, and building details, I learned to effectively communicate with emails. Luckily for me, NWU support services communicate effectively with it, and I managed to ask:

  • If it is okay for me to pack my bags and head over to my accredited residence.
  • How will I know if my fees are being paid ?
  • When will I receive my first allowance?
  • How will I gain access to the campus, and where to find the student card?
  • Where to enquire about my studies?
  • How to gain access to the school’s academic system, such as eFundi?

And for every question I sent, I received a follow-up email explaining how NSFAS supports South African students and what I should do to get more help.

For instance, if I contacted the main NWU service department, the person in charge would respond with an email that contained the contact information for the particular department I was looking for, like the NWU Finance Department at Vaal Campus.

In addition to providing solid evidence of what I am doing, this reassured my family and me, unlike depending on using knowledge I acquired from close friends only.

How does NSFAS cover my academic expenses (first phrases)?

The reality about the entire communication systems and finalization procedure is that it takes time, and it is difficult if you are a first-time candidate.

Hence, you need to understand that it is normal not to receive your stipend allowance immediately, and your fees will not be reimbursed instantly.

What matters is that your bursary application process runs smoothly and in accordance with university procedures.

Remember, NSFAS supports South African students by assuring the university that it will pay your tuition fees by signing an agreement.

And ack then this corporation allowed the institution to financially support us as we began our academic path till our costs were covered.

This is why it is crucial to find an academic institution that cares about the well-being of its students and internal stakeholders, such as North West University.

Additionally, communicating with the impacted parties in an efficient manner is important for the financial department’s safety, transparency, and security, as well as for the purpose of tracking payments.

Understanding the binding information

It is crucial to understand that every application you choose to submit, whether for a bursary or an academic program, creates legally binding information between you and the parties involved.

By clicking submit, you are accepting the terms and conditions of the parties involved, such as:

  • You commit to passing your modules (subjects) and to meeting the academic standards for them.
  • You agree that if you fail to pass, you will pay for your own examination fees if a second opportunity is granted.
  • You agree that your information and supporting papers are true and accurate and may be utilized to assist you further.
  • You agree that you will not use any government schemes carelessly and will only follow one.
  • You commit to repaying your student debts in whatever way or form in the future.

In my understanding of contractual agreements, they seek not only to hold you accountable but also to make you aware that not everyone has the opportunity to further their education.

And if you do have a chance, take advantage of it because it will not come again, and even if you do not receive your qualification, you will have a record of using the bursary program in your academic career.

Financial challenges experienced despite NSFAS support

The introduction of a new payment method by NSFAS caused some significant delays in allowance payments.

Before that, we used our personal banking cards, such as Capitec Bank, Netbank, and FNB, to receive monthly allowances.

However, when new payment systems were introduced, most students without outside funding struggled to make ends meet due to coming from low-income households.

While NSFAS supports South African students, these financial challenges continue to hinder effective study and the overall functioning of academia.

The delay in one financial stream affects the whole academic system, as students will not force themselves to attend lectures without proper nutritious meals.

Not only that, but the new system imposed greater banking fees, making it difficult for us to navigate the new protocol because we were already dealing with escalating costs of living, which included periodic increases in accommodation, food, and transportation costs.

With that in mind, note that while NSFAS supports South African students, frequent system optimization changes may or may not have a negative impact on your financial situation.

As a result, you should make every effort to take advantage of student-friendly meals and know what every first-year student needs before moving to a new residence, to survive and be prepared for anything that may come along on your academic journey.

This will help you save money and learn how to budget without compromising other responsibilities.

NSFAS is more than just financial aid

Yes, NSFAS supports South African students, and it is more than just financial aid, which continues to play a vital role in our economy even though the unemployment rate continues to increase, driving township migration in 2026. Regardless of the value of education, funding allows :

  • You can gain access to higher education without incurring debt.
  • Continue to pursue your ideal career and get the option to teach overseas.
  • You will have better income potential in the future.
  • You can collaborate with respected brands to improve employment possibilities for future generations.
  • You need to minimize financial stress and burden.
  • You need to alter your financial situation and challenging lifestyle.

When I think back on my experience, NSFAS has been much more than just a bursary; it has been a financial lifeline that enabled me to pursue further education.

NSFAS lessened the financial burden that frequently keeps academically gifted students from pursuing their academic objectives by paying for necessities like tuition, housing, and educational supplies.

Despite obstacles like growing living expenses and payment delays, NSFAS’s assistance has enabled me to concentrate on my education and strive for a better future.
